The Japanese zelkova (Zelkova serrata) is an Asian tree from the elm family that thrives best in low-lying valleys with moist fertile soil. They can be found in China, Japan and Korea. In Japan they can survive up to 1220 meters above sea level, especially on the islands of Honshu and Kyushu. Many ancient Japanese temples are made from the wood of this tree. The bark is smooth and light gray in color which in mature trees peel and gray beige spots become visible.
