The Larix (larch) is a popular bonsai species, particularly because the larch quickly gets thick stems. The changing color of the needles with the seasons is very popular, the larch is one of the few conifers that loses its needles in winter. The two most common types are the Larix decidua (European larch) and leptolepis Larix (larch Chinese).
