The Metasequoia glyptostroboides is the only living species of the genus Metasequoia. This tree belongs to the Taxodiaceae, family which is one of the families of coniferous trees which are counted as gymnosperms. This family also has other remarkable trees, such as the species of the genus Sequoia (the redwoods of California and Oregon), those of Sequoiadendron (with the giant sequoias or giant sequoia) and that of Taxodium (the moerascypres). The types of family Taxodiaceae are monoecious. This means that the male and female reproductive organs are on different trees. Furthermore, their pollen grains in contrast to that of the pine and spruce, have no wings air pockets. The trees from the genus Metasequoia were first known only as fossils. Initially, these 60 million year old fossils were included in the genus Sequoia. In 1941 a Japanese researcher of fossils gave the name Metasequoia, because it was different from the others. In the Second World War a Chinese forester found by chance in a remote region in southern China three trees that appeared to lose their leaves. It turned out in 1944, that the tree was not yet described. In 1945 there was an organized expedition to the area and there were more trees of this species. In 1948 people were convinced that the trees belong to the genus etasequoia which were previously only known as fossils.
